State Employees' Credit Union Hosts Scam Jam event to Help Members Combat ID Theft and Fraud!

Business Wire,  May 13, 2008

RALEIGH, N.C. -- State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) recently partnered with the NC Attorney General's Office, NC Division of Aging and Adult Services, NC Adult Protective Services, NC Retired Governmental Employees' Association (NCRGEA) and Iron Mountain Shredding Company to hold its first ever Scam Jam. The event, held May 3rd at the SECU Operations Center at 3101 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh, was designed to help members combat ID theft and fraud by providing educational workshops, informational booths and shredding services.

The Scam Jam was promoted to SECU's Golden Circle members within a one hour driving distance of the Scam Jam site. The Credit Union felt Golden Circle members, those 50 years of age and above, could benefit from the information provided. Karen Daeke, Vice President of SECU's Security Administration department explains, "Senior adults are the primary target for so many of today's scams, including identity theft. The Credit Union is aggressively working to educate our members about the various scams and fraudulent practices so they will be better prepared to recognize and avoid such activity."

In addition to the Scam Jam, SECU has partnered with groups such as NCRGEA and the Attorney General's Office to host other educational presentations related to senior scams, elder abuse and identity theft. SECU also works aggressively to train its employees on scams, including elder financial abuse. Daeke adds, "Knowledge is key in protecting yourself from savvy fraudsters who are more prevalent than ever before. Some of our members have fallen victim to various fraudulent practices and the Credit Union is committed to helping members get the information they need to protect themselves now and in the future."
