Univa UD Taps Industry Veterans to Lead HPC Business
Business Wire, May 14, 2008
LISLE, Ill. -- Univa UD, a pioneer in developing software products for the complete distributed computing lifecycle, today announced it has named industry veterans Gary Tyreman and Bill Bryce to lead its high performance computing business and fine-tune its product roadmap. Tyreman was named Vice President and General Manager of HPC and Bryce was named Director of HPC product management.
Tyreman, an industry consultant since leaving Platform Computing earlier this year, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the HPC space. At Platform, he was Vice President and Business Manager for the company's high performance computing division. During nearly five years there, he led the company's business planning, innovation and product management efforts while marshaling a team that developed some of the industry's most popular software.
"Gary brings a unique vision of the HPC market, industry leading technology expertise and a track record of disruptive innovation management to Univa UD," said Jason Liu, President and Chief Executive Officer at Univa UD. "Gary's experience, expertise and industry reputation give us great confidence that he will direct our HPC business to a top position in our industry. His hire spotlights the momentum Univa UD is building in the HPC space."
The announcements come on the heels of last week's announcement for Series B funding for the company.
"I'm happy to be joining Univa UD at such an historic time in the growth of the company," said Tyreman. "With our focus on HPC systems management, there is huge opportunity for us to capture the growing number of entry-level users that have emerged as HPC has become more commoditized. As small-scale clusters and distributed virtual infrastructures begin to dominate the HPC landscape, users will demand software that makes HPC systems easier to use and manage. It's a perfect fit for our technology suite, which has been developed around the core principal of making the complex simple."
Tyreman was among the first in the industry to recognize the emerging entry-level user in the HPC space and was responsible for developing a vision for how to simplify running applications off the shelf, a key to unlocking value among organizations new to HPC. He worked with Intel Corp. to develop his innovations, which were taken into account when Intel announced the Intel Cluster Ready program last year, making it easier to design, build, sell, program, acquire and deploy clusters built with Intel components.
Prior to his tenure at Platform Computing, Tyreman held a variety of executive positions in product management and marketing in technology growth companies, including Hummingbird, Delano and Itemus.
Also joining Univa UD from Platform Computing is Bill Bryce, an industry-savvy product manager who has led product teams working on enterprise software for more than a dozen years. At Univa UD, he has responsibility for development of the UniCluster product family, UniCluster Express and Grid MP.
Previously, Bryce was Senior Product Manager at Platform Computing, responsible for the architecture and development of Platform Open Cluster Stack. Bryce helped create and manage several HPC products and initiatives at Platform, including LSF HPC and ActiveCluster. His primary areas of focus are distributed computing, parallel programming, communications protocols and operating systems. Bryce holds a bachelor of mathematics and computer science degree from Canada's University of Waterloo, which offers one of the world's leading programs for computer science study.
Today's announcements come as Univa UD gains momentum around its HPC systems management software suite, anchored by its open source UniCluster Express cluster stack. The company plans a series of major upgrades to Grid.org, the online community that supports UniCluster Express, by early Q3 2008. Univa UD will also release a major upgrade for UniCluster Express in Q3 2008 including key partner integrations.
Available as free downloadable software at Grid.org (www.grid.org), UniCluster Express 3.2 is the only fully integrated, community-enabled cluster software stack with commercial support available for all components.
Univa UD will also release its next version of Grid MP, the company's market-leading technology for dedicated and non-dedicated distributed computing, in Q3 2008. Grid MP's numerous technology accolades include a recent finalist nod at the annual BioIT World conference in Boston, MA.
Company technology experts will speak about product roadmaps and unveil Grid.org development plans at the Open Source Grid and Cluster Conference this week in Oakland, CA (http://www.opensourcegridcluster.org/). Univa UD is a platinum sponsor for the event, which brings together users and developers of the world's most popular open source grid and cluster software, including Globus, Sun Grid Engine, Rocks, Ganglia, UniCluster Express, and many other open source components.
