Siemens Rounds out Its WiMAX Portfolio with an Outdoor Modem

Business Wire, May 16, 2008

MUNICH, Germany -- Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices (SHC) is enlarging its portfolio of WiMAX end-user devices with the addition of an outdoor modem. The Gigaset SE680 WiMAX, which is based on the IEEE 802.16-2005 standard, complies with Wave 2 specifications, including MIMO (Multiple Input / Multiple Output) A and B, and supports beamforming. The modem is particularly well suited for broadband connections at small enterprises or for bridging large distances. SHC is premiering the outdoor modem at the WiMAX World EMEA congress in Munich.

The Gigaset SE680 WiMAX outdoor modem enables high-speed Internet access at data rates of up to 20 Mbps and is available as of summer 2008 for the 2.5 and 3.5 GHz frequency bands. It conforms to Wave 2 specifications and, with its two integrated antennas, supports MIMO (Matrix A and B) and adaptive beamforming so that the signal is amplified between the base station and WiMAX end-user devices. If desired, an external antenna can also be connected to increase the range. Such antennas produce a gain of up to 18 dBi at 3.5 GHz or 15 dBi at 2.5 GHz.

An acoustic signal output via the computer during installation helps ensure optimum alignment of the outdoor modem. The compact modem is easy to install, and Power over Ethernet reduces cabling.

Remote administration of end-user devices enables secure remote provisioning, while authentication, configuration and management services ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. The Gigaset SE680 WiMAX can be installed and administered via both the TR-069 and OMA-DM protocols. It is developed in Germany and manufactured in keeping with stringent standards of quality and environmental protection.

"We again put a lot of emphasis on intelligent antenna technology in designing the Gigaset SE680 WiMAX outdoor modem. For example, we integrated two antennas to increase transmission quality and data rates through MIMO functionality. In addition, these antennas are arranged x-shaped to optimize communications with the various antenna systems of base stations," noted Dr. Marc Achhammer, head of WiMAX at Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices.

The WiMAX portfolio, which is based on IEEE 802.16-2005, includes a data modem, a VoIP modem, an Express Card and two gateways with an extensive range of data and voice services.

SHC is giving a live demonstration of its WiMAX gateways and its Express Card (booth 205).
