Business Wire, May 16, 2008
my brain to work," he said in a Lehigh Career Services newsletter in 1984. "Lehigh taught me the basics, including how and where to get the answers, then made it clear that only I could exercise the reasoning necessary to get results."
Stabler had a strong work ethic and was dedicated to his companies, his employees, and his community. Stabler's work was his passion, and he continued to work six-and-a-half-days a week until he was 88 years old.
"He was tough-minded and feisty, but flexible and willing to listen. He was meticulous in his work, intelligent, knowledgeable, extremely demanding of himself and others, yet generous to employees and charities," says Dunmire.
Previously, the largest gift to Lehigh had been $25 million from Peter C. Rossin '48, to name the P.C. Rossin School of Engineering and Applied Science in 1998.
Stabler's gift brings total support for Shine Forever: The Campaign for Lehigh to $400 million. The campaign, which has a goal of $500 million, is focused on raising endowment for faculty chairs, undergraduate scholarships, academic programs, and student life and athletics. More information about the campaign, its priorities, and progress, can be found at www.lehigh.edu/giving.
