Local Man Rescues Family, Earns GEICO Community Volunteer of the Year Award

Business Wire,  May 2, 2008

OTTAWA, Ohio -- Rex Johnson of Ottawa, Ohio, was the honored recipient at today's GEICO Volunteer Service Awards ceremony at GEICO's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Johnson, a claims adjuster for GEICO since 2005, has volunteered for 12 years with two local fire departments in McGuffey and Ottawa. He demonstrated great courage last year when he rescued a man, woman and their children as overflowing waters of Ohio's Blanchard River threatened their home. Johnson picked them up by boat as rains swelled the flooded riverbanks and transported them to safety. It wasn't until several days later, when Johnson inspected their flooded vehicles, that he learned the man was a GEICO policyholder.

"I was completely surprised when I was told I had received this award," Johnson said. "This award is not mine alone; it is shared with firefighters from my department and all the departments who helped out during that week. I'm just very thankful that I work for a company that recognizes its associates for their volunteer efforts."

GEICO's Mary Zarcone, regional vice president in Macon, said, "Rex was chosen because he epitomizes the spirit of volunteer service. What makes him so special is how he always puts the safety of others first. GEICO rewards its associates who make a difference by contributing to the organizations for which they volunteer. We are very proud of Rex."

Johnson was treated to a weekend trip to Washington, D.C. He received a certificate of appreciation, a cash award, and a $1,000 contribution in his name to the Ottawa Fire Department Association.

He and his wife, Janine, have been married 20 years and have three children, Joshua, 16; Carly, 13; and Carrington, 8. Johnson is also a member of the Ottawa-Glandorf Junior Chamber (Jaycees).

The GEICO Volunteer Service Awards are presented annually to recognize the many contributions GEICO associate volunteers make.
