EU Ambassadors Celebrate Europe Day at Local Schools
Business Wire, May 2, 2008
WASHINGTON -- European Union Ambassadors will celebrate Europe Day, May 9, by becoming substitute teachers at schools in the District, Maryland and Virginia.
Europe Day marks the historic day in 1950 when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman called on France, Germany and other countries to combine their coal and steel production under a single European institution. Following the Schuman Declaration, the European Economic Community (EEC) of six nations was established by the Treaty of Rome in 1957 leading to what we now know as the European Union of 27 nations.
Ambassador John Bruton, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to the United States, will be joined by colleagues from 26 EU Member State embassies in talking to students about the European Union at 32 public and private area schools. They will also provide classroom materials for both teachers and students, including interactive resources. The teaching sessions will take place between May 5 and May 13, with most of the Ambassadors teaching on Europe Day itself.
"The high school visit is always a highlight for me," said Ambassador Bruton. "I truly enjoy the interaction with students as I talk about the role of the EU in the world and I am always impressed by the level of their questions. This is such a great way for me and my colleagues to celebrate Europe Day."
