SPRING HOUSE, Pa. -- A pioneer in the field of laser chemistry, Richard N. Zare, PhD, chair of the chemistry department at Stanford University, received the 2008 George C. Pimentel Award in Chemistry Education from the American Chemical Society (ACS). Sponsored by Rohm and Haas Company (NYSE:ROH), the award is presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to chemical education, including the training of professional chemists; the dissemination of reliable information about chemistry to the general public; and the integration of chemistry into the educational system.

Zare is praised as a renaissance chemical scientist who has made contributions to both physical and analytical chemistry. His advancements in laser chemistry led to a greater understanding of chemical reactions at the molecular level. He has authored or co-authored over 700 publications, including four books, and holds more than 50 patents. His commitment to chemical education has been recognized through more than 50 national and regional awards, and honorary degrees. Zare earned a bachelors of arts in chemistry and physics and a doctorate in chemical physics from Harvard University.
