PCA presents the Overall Environmental Excellence Award to a plant demonstrating merit in each of the five categories which include: Environmental Performance, Land Stewardship, Community Involvement, Innovation, and Energy Efficiency. The Overall award honors one company that exemplifies the spirit of continuous environmental improvement and supports this spirit with action. The Davenport plant received the award for its efforts in going beyond government regulations to ensure that its processes and policies contributed to making their communities better places to live and work.
The plant was also a finalist in the Environmental Performance and Energy Efficiency categories. This is the second consecutive year the plant received the Land Stewardship Award. Last year, the plant was a finalist for the Overall award.
In 2007, the facility completed improvements for dust control, site paving, and storm water controls, and made other site improvements. Among its innovative operations, the plant reclaims more than 26,000 tons annually from an existing cement kiln dust landfill. To conserve resources, the facility collects and uses byproducts from other industries and wastewater. As a community stewardship project, the plant collects and recycles wastewater generated from the Davenport sanitary treatment system operated by the County of Santa Cruz and uses it in the plant's cooling water system. The use of the recycled wastewater has reduced the Davenport plant's use of fresh water by more than 200,000 gallons on a monthly basis and enables the Davenport Sanitation District to have a little to zero discharge into Monterey Bay. The plant received the 2007 U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR[R] award for protecting the environment through industry-leading energy efficiency measures. The facility routinely involves the community in plant activities, and supports local organizations through volunteering and providing assistance on community projects and charitable contributions.
The CEMEX Davenport plant has established a diverse land stewardship program across its 9,000-acre forest land. In 2007, the plant initiated a partnership with the University of California in Santa Cruz to complete an inventory of the diverse plant communities. Additionally, the plant maintains a Habitat Conservation Plan for the California red-legged frog.
