Trends for GaN laser Diodes and Bulk Substrates
BOSTON -- Strategy Analytics market analyst, Asif Anwar, will be presenting his paper, "GaN Laser Diode and Material Market Trends," at the Blue 2008 conference on May 7 and 8, in Hsinchu Taiwan. Mr. Anwar will outline the market prospects for GaN laser diodes and highlight future substrate material trends that will have an impact on the laser diode and LED markets.
The presentation will review the development of the GaN laser diode market and highlight the challenges that remain for this technology to successfully penetrate the mainstream consumer electronics markets. Choice of substrate will be an integral part of this market development; the presentation will highlight the potential penetration of native bulk substrates versus sapphire technology.

"The optical data storage market will account for over 99% of the total demand for GaN laser diodes through 2011 with the market growing to $1.2 billion," observed Asif Anwar. "While the Blu-ray versus HD-DVD platform battle has been resolved, real challenges lie ahead in displacing existing mainstream platforms and succeeding against other emerging technologies proposed for viewing high definition content."
"On the substrate front, sapphire is the main technology for GaN-based LEDs and laser diodes but availability of GaN substrates has helped open up the number of laser diode manufacturers entering the merchant market," added Mr. Anwar. "A number of LED manufacturers are also making the move towards larger diameter substrates to improve manufacturing yields and productivity."
