Walgreens Honolulu Drugstore Raises More Than $2,300 for American Heart Association Hawai'i Affiliate
Business Wire, May 8, 2008
DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Walgreens (NYSE:WAG)(NASDAQ:WAG) today presented a check for $2,320 to the American Heart Association Hawai'i affiliate. The money was raised during Walgreens annual "Take Heart and Give" campaign in February, during which stores sell paper hearts for $1, with all proceeds going to the American Heart Association.
Nationwide, Walgreens raised more than $1.6 million during this year's campaign.
Walgreens Honolulu location also will support the AHA with a team at the 15th annual Oahu Heart Walk at Kapiolani Park on Aug. 16.
"As a pharmacy and health care retailer, we place special emphasis on being involved with health care charities," said Walgreens Hawai'i district manager Dana Psomas. "In Hawai'i, more than 3,200 people die each year from heart disease. We hope this contribution helps lower that number in the years ahead."
Don Weisman, Hawai'i communications and marketing/government affairs director for the AHA, said, "The American Heart Association is committed to improving employees' health. Walgreens support of the American Heart Association's Start! program will enable the AHA to help companies encourage their employees to live healthier, happier lives. The Start! concept is simple. Companies set up 'walking routes' in the workplace, encourage employees to use them, and celebrate and reward those employees who go from a sedentary lifestyle to a more active one. Everyone wins. The employees are healthier and more productive, the companies save on health care costs and fewer Americans are disabled or die from heart disease and stroke. And when company leaders make health a priority and show their commitment, employees follow."
Walgreens opened its first Hawai'i store in November 2007 at 1488 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu. Two more locations will open by the end of 2008 and additional stores are planned for 2009.
Walgreens is the nation's largest drugstore chain with fiscal 2007 sales of $53.8 billion. The company operates 6,204 drugstores in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Walgreens is expanding its patient-first health care services beyond traditional pharmacy through Walgreens Health Services, its managed care division, and Take Care Health Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary that manages 168 convenient care clinics at Walgreens drugstores. Walgreens Health Services assists pharmacy patients and prescription drug and medical plans through Walgreens Health Initiatives Inc. (a pharmacy benefit manager), Walgreens Mail Service Inc., Walgreens Home Care Inc., Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy LLC and SeniorMed LLC (a pharmacy provider to long-term care facilities).
