Eclipsys CPOE Solution Supports Reduced Medication Errors by 29%, Turnaround Time for Urgent Needs by 40%
ATLANTA -- Eclipsys Corporation([R]) (NASDAQ: ECLP), The Outcomes Company([R]), today announced that the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS), Ann Arbor, Mich., recently deployed Eclipsys' Sunrise Acute Care[TM] across its entire 913-bed inpatient delivery system. The successful
enterprise-wide initiative improves UMHS' advanced medical information capabilities to new levels with clinicians across the organization, providing quick access to standardized order sets and related tools as part of the organization's commitment to continuously improving safety and quality of care. With more than 8,000 trained staff now incorporating Sunrise Acute Care into their daily activities, measurable outcomes to date include a reduction in medication errors by 29 percent, along with a 40 percent reduction in time to administer urgent medication orders.

UMHS initially deployed Eclipsys' Sunrise Acute Care comprehensive computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system to its C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in 2007. Based on the success of the phase one implementation, the system was implemented throughout UMHS in the first half of 2008. Sunrise Acute Care, a component of Eclipsys' Sunrise Enterprise[TM] suite of solutions, which exist within the Eclipsys XA[TM] architecture, is now a fundamental component of the organization's clinical information technology infrastructure -- integrating with existing laboratory, radiology and pharmacy systems to enhance medication safety, streamline clinician workflow and improve patient care.
"This has been a massive undertaking in the U-M Health System," says Douglas L. Strong, chief executive officer, University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers. "Our needs for a computerized physician order entry solution were extremely challenging since every day there are tens of thousands of orders written, carried out and documented in our three hospitals and major hospital-based treatment areas. We have a very complex clinical environment here, and the Eclipsys Sunrise Acute Care managed it well during the pilot phase. That positive experience gave us the confidence to implement it for thousands of staff in a relatively short period of time to help improve patient safety and quality of care."
Using Sunrise Acute Care, clinicians can order tests, procedures, medications and nutrition services online, from any computer, eliminating the need for paper forms. It also lets them get instant access to patient allergies, potential drug interactions and other information, enabling patient safety at the highest levels. The system allows providers to order patient medication electronically and tracks patient handoffs between caregivers and departments, minimizing all risks associated with multiple providers caring for one patient. It also reduces the time it takes to get medication from the hospital pharmacy to the patient's bedside.
"Eclipsys continues to build its reputation on satisfied clients that achieve measurable outcomes," said Jay Deady, executive vice president, Client Solutions, Eclipsys Corporation. "We are pleased that the University of Michigan has achieved this implementation milestone and are gratified by the trust they have placed in us and our solutions in their drive for significantly enhanced clinical decision making, patient safety and efficiency."
UMHS was recently named to the nation's Most Wired and Most Wireless hospitals, according to the results of the 2008 Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study. This analysis found that the 100 Most Wired hospitals show better outcomes in patient satisfaction, risk-adjusted mortality rates and other key quality measures through the use of information technology.
