Penn State Hershey Sleep Research and Treatment Center Moves into the Hershey Center for Applied Research
Business Wire, Oct 15, 2008
HERSHEY, Pa. -- The Hershey Center for Applied Research (HCAR) announced today a new tenant in Building One: Penn State Hershey Sleep Research and Treatment Center (Sleep Center). With collaboration between the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine departments of Psychiatry and Medicine, the 12-bed Sleep Center will begin conducting sleep studies on a limited basis and is expected to reach full capacity in the coming months.
The Sleep Center helps children and adults who are affected by nighttime problems such as insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, hypersomnia, night terrors, sleep walking and bed wetting. In routine sleep studies, various body systems are monitored while patients sleep. The Sleep Center makes recommendations to the patients' physicians for specific treatment.

"HCAR is an ideal location for our Sleep Center because our organizations have the shared goal of bringing advances in research to the public," said Edward O. Bixler, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry, Penn State College of Medicine. "The cutting-edge facilities and amenities at HCAR are an ideal match to the caliber of research we conduct; we are certain our new location will help accelerate the growth of the Sleep Center."
"We're very pleased to welcome the Sleep Center, its researchers, clinicians and patients to our campus," said Laura Butcher, Executive Director of HCAR. "The strength of the Sleep Center's research and treatment is another great example of how this region is moving research from the lab bench to the patient bedside."
The Sleep Center's new address will be:
Penn State Hershey Sleep Research and Treatment Center Hershey Center for Applied Research 1214 Research Boulevard, Suite 1158-1159 Hummelstown, PA 17036
In addition to its contributions to scientific research aimed to better understand the mechanisms of sleep disorders, this center also serves as an educational resource for those in the medical profession and community at large. The Sleep Center traces its roots to sleep research pioneer Anthony Kales, a Penn State College of Medicine professor emeritus in psychiatry, who established the center at UCLA in 1963 and moved it to Hershey in 1971. A formal ribbon cutting ceremony and open house are being planned for the near future.
