About Scott McClellan
Throughout his twenty year career as a public servant, campaign strategist, best-selling author and presidential adviser, Scott McClellan has been an active participant in the public arena. From 2003 to 2006, he served as White House Press Secretary for President George W. Bush.
A communications and political strategist, Mr. McClellan frequently provides commentary and analysis on current events. He lectures at venues across the United States, and has been a guest on a variety of network and cable television shows, including The Today Show, The Morning Show, The Late Show, The Tonight Show, Hardball, Larry King Live, AC360, Countdown, The O'Reilly Factor, Real Time with Bill Maher, The Colbert Report and The Daily Show.
In May 2008, he published a #1 New York Times best-seller titled, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception. The book is an insider's account of how three destructive forces--the permanent campaign style of governing, the philosophy of politics as war and the scandal culture--poison America's political discourse and, along with policy missteps like the rush to war in Iraq, played an instrumental role in the Bush presidency veering off course, and what Americans--Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike--can learn from it to change the way Washington governs.
In the past, he served as the Principal Deputy White House Press Secretary. Before joining the White House staff, Mr. McClellan was the traveling press secretary for the Bush-Cheney 2000 presidential campaign. Earlier in his career, McClellan spent a number of years working in Texas politics as a senior aide to the governor, campaign manager for three successful statewide campaigns, and chief of staff to a state senator.
A native of Austin, Texas, Mr. McClellan comes from a family steeped in public service. His mother was the first woman elected mayor of Austin when he was just nine years old. She went on to serve three terms. Later, Mr. McClellan would engineer her return to the political stage as he oversaw her successful statewide campaigns to become the first woman elected to both the oil and gas regulatory commission in Texas and the powerful Texas Comptroller's office. His grandfather, the late W. Page Keeton was the legendary dean of the University of Texas law school. His eldest brother Mark, a widely respected expert on health care and health economics, is a former FDA Commissioner and head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Mr. McClellan is a graduate of the University of Texas. In 2005, he received the Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award. Mr. McClellan serves on the International Advisory Council for APCO Worldwide, a global communication consultancy headquartered in Washington, D.C.
