The Boston Globe Introduces "g" - A New Section for Arts, Entertainment and Lifestyle Coverage
Business Wire, Oct 24, 2008
BOSTON -- The Boston Globe today launched "g" - a new daily magazine-style section focusing on arts, culture, entertainment, people and lifestyle. The new section is part of several changes to the daily paper that were introduced today to help readers better navigate the Globe.
The new section, "g," brings together the Globe's coverage of arts and culture, restaurants and food, and style and people in an engaging, easy-to-read, visually arresting package. Also included are the comics and a TV guide -- both published in color for the first time. Almost every page of "g" will be in color - allowing for a dramatic display of photographs, graphics and advertisements.
The Globe conducted a wealth of reader research to guide the development of "g." Readers indicated a strong appreciation of the Globe's reviews, previews, profiles, and overall arts, culture and features, but preferred that the coverage appear in a single section so it would be easier to find stories of interest. Readers also indicated that a magazine-style tabloid-size for "g" would be of high value. It would be easier to read when out of the home, and they would be more likely to keep it around the home for future use.
Boston Globe editor Martin Baron stated, "Readers of the Globe like to go out and enjoy life, and they like learning about their neighbors in a community that is rich with interesting people. In creating 'g' we've sought to deliver a section that serves those needs and passions."
"g" will be published Monday through Saturday as an all-in-one replacement for a number of the Globe's current sections -- Sidekick, Calendar, Living & Arts, Food & Arts, Style & Arts and Weekend. On Sunday, the Globe will retain the full-sized, broadsheet Arts & Entertainment section.
Other changes to the daily paper include more consistent sectioning, anchored features and the continuation of all page one stories within the first section. On the Nation and World pages, redesigned news summaries will give readers a panoramic and convenient way of staying up-to-date.
