Unisys to Create New Web Portal on Immigration for European Commission
Business Wire, Oct 3, 2008
New Website for Potential Migrants to the EU is Single Entry Point for Reliable Information on Migration Issues
BRUSSELS -- The European Commission has selected Unisys Belgium, a subsidiary of Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS), to create a web portal that will inform on European and national immigration policies and law. The Portal provides non residents interested in migrating to the European Union (EU) with access to information on migration issues, aiming to discourage illegal immigration by highlighting the associated risks.
Unisys Belgium, together with its partner the Migration Policy Group (MPG), will provide technical, management and content services for the portal.
The portal on immigration will bring together and provide access to immigration information from all EU member states. It will include information on EU and member states immigration policies, opportunities for legal migration, issues related to irregular migration and links to relevant services and administrative processes.
"People who are thinking about moving to EU member states deserve the most up-to-date information on opportunities, requirements and processes," says Ann Mennens, Project Manager of the Immigration Portal. "This portal will provide potential immigrants with a comprehensive tool that will support them when making the decision to move abroad."
All member states of the EU have agreed to develop a common immigration policy to better manage migration through a coordinated approach. The EU Immigration Portal is one of the key non-legislative tools planned by the Commission to substantially improve access to information about immigration.
"Immigration management is one of the EU's major challenges in the years to come. Europe will need to invest significantly in order to manage existing migration flows and deal with new waves of migration," says Patrice-Emmanuel Schmitz, director, EU Management Consulting, Unisys. "Together with our partner MPG, Unisys intends to create a portal that gives all stakeholders a clear, cross-community understanding of the benefits and implications of immigration in the EU, without forgetting the risks and consequences of illegal immigration."
The portal will clarify opportunities and processes for immigration candidates in order to encourage them to enter the EU legally.
About the European Commission
The European Commission was created to represent the European interest common to all member states of the European Union. So that it can play its role as guardian of the treaties and defender of the general interest, the Commission has been given a right of initiative in the legislative process, proposing the legislation on which the European Parliament and the Council decide. The Commission is also responsible for implementing common policies, such as the internal market, the social funds, the agricultural policy, research and innovation. It administers the budget and manages the Union's programs.
