Headquartered in Best, the Netherlands, and Andover, MA, USA, Philips Healthcare is part of the multinational electronics giant, Royal Philips Electronics Group. Formerly called Philips Medical Systems, the new Healthcare operating sector was created at the beginning of 2008 when Philips realigned its business activities into three separate companies - Healthcare, Lighting and Consumer Lifestyle - with each being responsible for the management of its businesses worldwide. Philips Healthcare brings together the former Medical Systems division and Home Healthcare Solutions - formerly the Consumer Healthcare Solutions business - which has been transferred from Innovation & Emerging Businesses.
Philips Healthcare offers a broad portfolio of medical systems. The company's product line includes X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, computed tomography, nuclear medicine and PET imaging technologies, as well as radiation oncology systems, patient monitoring, information management and resuscitation products. Philips Healthcare also offers a wide range of services to support its businesses. Philips Healthcare is a leader in many of the markets in which it participates and in 2007 had sales of EUR 6.7 billion (approximately US$9.9 billion).
A core part of Philips healthcare strategy is to achieve a leading position in the high growth sector of home healthcare. Given the unsustainably high healthcare costs in many markets and increased emphasis on both efficiency and patient comfort, there is a gradual shift towards diagnosing, treating and monitoring patients in their homes rather than in hospitals. Demand for home healthcare is also growing due to the increasing number of elderly people and the rising incidence of chronic diseases. Philips had already made a number of successful acquisitions in the home healthcare area, including Lifeline Systems, Health Watch and Raytel Cardiac Services, but recently executed its biggest acquisition to date with the purchase of Respironics for US$5.1 billion. Respironics is the global leader in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), a sleep disorder characterised by the repeated cessation of breathing during sleep. Additionally, the company has a leading position in non-invasive ventilation and has recently introduced new home oxygen technologies to serve the needs of respiratory-impaired patients in the home. The Respironics acquisition creates for Philips a Healthcare sector with sales of over EUR 7 billion going forward and global leadership positions in areas such as cardiac care, acute care, and now also home healthcare. The acquisition also affords Philips a more diversified portfolio in its healthcare business and less reliance on its US$4 billion imaging systems business which has been affected by softening in the key North American market, principally due to cuts in reimbursement, and which is not expected to show any real recovery in the near term.
