RLI Transportation expands courier program to include local delivery companies

Business Wire, Sept 16, 2008

PEORIA, Ill. -- RLI Corp. (NYSE:RLI) -- RLI Transportation's Commercial Auto Unit announced an expansion of its mono-line commercial auto appetite to include local delivery operations that deliver non-perishables. The enhanced program builds upon the underwriting expertise and segment knowledge that had previously focused on courier fleets.

RLI Transportation Assistant Vice President Eric Galisdorfer explained, "Over the last few years, larger 'big box' retailers like Home Depot and manufacturers like Whirlpool have increased their reliance on outsourcing for local deliveries. These delivery firms use straight trucks, vans and pickup trucks to make these deliveries. However, many insurance companies price and underwrite them as if they are truckers." Galisdorfer added, "Because they're using smaller power units, this group's federal regulations are different from 'big-rig' truckers - we're putting our underwriting expertise to work pricing these policies appropriately."

Coverages for the local delivery operations are underwritten by RLI Insurance Company and are admitted in all states except Alaska, Hawaii, La. and Mass. Minimum premiums start at $10,000.

RLI is a specialty insurance company serving "niche" or underserved markets. Its proven, superior underwriting model creates the flexibility to write unique coverages in a wide array of diverse industries. RLI's subsidiaries - RLI Insurance Company, Mt. Hawley Insurance Company and RLI Indemnity Company - are rated A "Superior" by A.M. Best Company and A "Strong" by Standard & Poor's. RLI operates in all 50 states from office locations across the country.
