HHS Meeting Offers a Glimpse into the Future of Health IT

Business Wire, Sept 22, 2008

Agenda Features a Live Demonstration of the Nationwide Health Information Network; New Public-Private Health IT Group to Announce its Board of Directors

The 24th meeting of the American Health Information Community (AHIC) Tuesday, September 23, will showcase real time data exchanges among 19 organizations currently participating in the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN). The demonstrations will focus on information exchange among regional, state, and national organizations, including Federal agencies to support patient care activities.

Tuesday's meeting will also include an announcement of the board of directors of AHIC Successor, Inc. The current AHIC was formed in 2005 to help advance efforts to reach President Bush's call for most Americans to have electronic health records within ten years. AHIC is a federally-chartered advisory committee and provides input and recommendations to HHS on how to make health records digital and interoperable, and assure that the privacy and security of those records are protected, in a smooth, market-led way. AHIC Successor, Inc. will build on the accomplishments of the original AHIC, which is expected to complete its work at the end of 2008, and serve to establish the effort's leadership in the private sector, while maintaining significant public representation.

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt and Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Peake are scheduled to participate.
