Mr. Brock Wagner, Saint Arnold Brewing Co.
In the 1980s, Brock Wagner grew frustrated with flavorless beers and set out to solve the problem. He clandestinely brewed stout in his Rice University dorm room. Years later, with his love of beer making strengthened by a decade of home brewing, Wagner established Saint Arnold Brewing Company with Kevin Bartol. It was 1994 and both had left careers in the mergers and acquisitions department of an investment bank. They named the company after a seventh-century bishop of Metz, France. Saint Arnold was a patron saint of brewers. In 1999, Wagner bought out Bartol and most of his outside investors. Saint Arnold Brewing Company has won a mantel-full of awards, most recently taking the Bronze Medal at the 2004 World Beer Cup for Saint Arnold Amber Ale. Its 10 beers (five year-round brews and five seasonals) are available only in Texas. In recent years, Saint Arnold has bucked national trends and has continued its steady growth. In 2002, the brewery posted 20 percent growth, hitting 6,000 barrels. In 2003, Saint Arnold produced 7,000 barrels, an increase of approximately 17 percent. Wagner recently reported that 2004 production exceeded 9,100 barrels, up 27 percent from 2003. Today, Saint Arnold is the largest independent brewing company in Texas and the state's oldest microbrewery. Saint Arnold Amber Ale is its biggest seller, followed by Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower Beer, which was introduced in 2000. Other year-round beers from Saint Arnold include Saint Arnold Brown Ale, Saint Arnold Elissa IPA and Saint Arnold Kristall Weizen. Seasonal offerings include Saint Arnold Spring Bock, Saint Arnold Summer Pils, Saint Arnold Oktoberfest, Saint Arnold Christmas Ale and Saint Arnold Winter Stout. "I am proud that we make world-class beer and get it to the people of Texas as fresh as possible," said Wagner.
