Strategy Analytics: 90 Million Touchscreen Phones to Be Sold Worldwide in 2009
Business Wire, Sept 30, 2008
BOSTON -- According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, touchscreen phone shipments will reach 90 million units worldwide in 2009, accounting for 7 percent of total volumes. Price and screen size are critical factors for success.
Tom Kang, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics said, "We forecast 90 million touchscreen phones to be sold worldwide in 2009, accounting for 7 percent of total volumes. We expect Nokia and Apple to ramp up shipments next year and start to drive down the price of touchscreen handsets toward the mid-range."
Neil Mawston, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "Price is not the only factor for success. Screen size is also an important metric. Finger-operated touchscreens typically work best on large displays above 3 inches in size, because this makes them more accurate and more user-friendly. For this reason, finger-based touchscreens will be mostly restricted to smartphones and feature phones over the next few years and mass-market consumers should not expect to see them on entry-level devices any time soon."
