Signature Eyewear Reports Increased Sales and Earnings in First Quarter
Business Wire, March 12, 2009
LOS ANGELES -- Signature Eyewear, Inc. (OTCBB:SEYE) reported net income of $199,000 ($.03 per share basic and $.02 per shared fully diluted) on net sales of $6.0 million for the quarter ended January 31, 2009. This compares to net income of $150,000 ($.02 per share basic and fully diluted) on net sales of $5.6 million for the quarter ended January 31, 2008.
The 7.3% increase in net sales was due to increased domestic sales, principally of bebe eyewear and Nicole Miller Eyewear. These increases in domestic sales more than offset the continued decline in international sales. The increase in net income was due primarily to higher sales and reductions in interest expense and the allowance for returns.
Gross profit increased $273,000 from the 2008 quarter to the 2009 quarter due to increased sales, while gross margin increased slightly to 64.6% from 64.4% between period. Selling expenses increased $206,000 or 1.1% from the 2008 quarter to the 2009 quarter. During the same period, general and administrative expenses increased $35,000, resulting in a 1.1% decrease in these expenses as a percentage of sales.
Michael Prince, Chief Executive Officer of Signature, stated, “We are continuing to emphasize our value-priced products, particularly with the recent introduction of Michael Stars Eyewear and our expanded Signature Collection. We believe our excellent results in the quarter reflect the consumer-friendly price structure of our lines.”
