Veterans with Disabilities Find Inspiration on the Slopes of Snowmass Village, Colorado
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Health Net Federal Services, LLC (Health Net), the government operations division of Health Net, Inc. (NYSE:HNT) and MHN, its behavioral health subsidiary, are honored to serve as corporate sponsors of the 23rd National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass Village, Colo., March 29 – April 3, 2009. Health Net is proud to participate as a host sponsor of the Winter Sports Clinic for the fourth time as a part of its ongoing commitment to serving veterans and supporting programs that improve their quality of life.
“Health Net and MHN salute the determination, courage and success of veterans with disabilities participating in the 23rd National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic,” said Steve Tough, president, Health Net Federal Services. “We are dedicated to helping veterans achieve a fit and healthy life, and we honor their service to our country.”
“Injured veterans and their family members face unique challenges,” said MHN president Juanell Hefner. “In addition to the physical and mental challenges of a disabling injury, they’re often struggling with the difficulties of post-traumatic stress and reintegration into civilian life. We understand what these families are going through, and we’re honored to do our part to help them be well.”
MHN will provide mental health professionals from the Military & Family Life Consultant Program (MFLC) to offer free on-site counseling services for participating veterans and their families. Additionally, counselors will hold a forum to discuss the stressors within a marriage when caring for a wounded warrior. These same counseling services were very well received among the disabled veterans and families who attended last year’s Winter Sports Clinic.
The clinic is open to U.S. military veterans with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries or disease, orthopedic amputations, visual impairments, certain neurological conditions, and other disabilities, who receive care at a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facility or military treatment facility.
More than 400 athletes are expected to participate in the events. For veterans recently injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF), the Clinic offers their first experiences in winter sports and provides inspiration for continued self-development. The Winter Sports Clinic’s activities instill not only confidence and hope, but also demonstrate that having a visual or physical disability need not be an obstacle to an active, rewarding life.
