Facility Operated by B&W’s Palm Beach Resource Recovery Corporation Wins ASME 2009 Facility Recognition Award

Business Wire, June 15, 2009

BARBERTON, Ohio -- The North County Resource Recovery Facility (NCRRF) of Palm Beach County, Fla. – operated and maintained by a Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. (B&W PGG) subsidiary – has won the ASME 2009 Large Waste-to-Energy Facility Recognition Award for outstanding performance among facilities in North America. The Solid Waste Authority (SWA) of Palm Beach County owns the NCRRF.

Palm Beach Resource Recovery Corporation (PBRRC), a subsidiary of B&W PGG, a major operating unit of The Babcock & Wilcox Company, provides operations and maintenance services for the NCRRF, a 60-megawatt power plant that turns municipal solid waste into electricity for 30,000 homes in Palm Beach County.

“We’re proud to be the operator of the NCRRF and this award recognizes our exceptional safety and environmental performance, operational excellence and innovation,” said Jim Kulig, Vice President and General Manager, B&W PGG. “Over the life of the plant, we’ve processed 3.5 million tons of waste in excess of our contractual commitment, which has saved valuable landfill space, reduced emissions into the environment and allowed us to generate an additional 1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity.”

Over the last five years, the NCRRF’s availability rate was among the highest in the industry and its forced outage rate was among the lowest, thanks in large part to the plant’s ability to identify and provide solutions to the causes for unplanned downtime – particularly with respect to pressure part and stoker grate systems. Since the plant began commercial operation in 1989, recovery of non-ferrous materials for recycling has increased five-fold.

The B&W PGG team built the NCRRF. B&W PGG is also under contract to provide operations and maintenance services until October 2029. The facility will undergo a $200 million refurbishment beginning April 2010.
