TNG-CWA to Present Broun, Herblock, Barr Awards for Excellence in Journalism

Business Wire, June 17, 2009

WASHINGTON -- The Newspaper Guild-CWA awards honoring excellence in journalism will be presented on Thursday, June 18, during TNG-CWA’s annual conference in Washington.

Two Washington Post reporters have won this year’s Broun Award for a seven-part series that revealed how city landlords were driving tenants out of rent-controlled apartments. This year’s recipient of the Herbert Block Freedom Award is Michael J. Copps, acting chair of the Federal Communications Commission. Copps was recognized for his work promoting debate and transparency on issues affecting media concentration.

The Broun award honors journalists whose work help correct an injustice, in the spirit of Heywood Broun, founder of the Newspaper Guild. The Herblock award is a tribute to Herbert Block, the longtime Washington Post editorial cartoonist and TNG member of 67 years.
