Cricket Expects to Raise $100,000 for Families Fighting Cancer at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego
Business Wire, Nov 06, 2009
Fourth Annual Golf Tournament, Helicopter Ball Drop and Silent Auction to Benefit Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders
SAN DIEGO -- Cricket Communications, Inc., a San Diego-based leading provider of unlimited wireless services and wholly owned subsidiary of Leap Wireless International, Inc. (NASDAQ:LEAP), will host a charity golf tournament on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, to raise funds for families dealing with cancer at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. Approximately three children are diagnosed with cancer each week in San Diego.
“Having a child diagnosed with cancer can turn families upside down, emotionally and financially,” said Donna Donoghue, director of the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital. “The Cricket Charity Golf Tournament is an inspiring example of how a community partner can make a positive impact in the lives of families struggling with a cancer diagnosis.”
The sold-out event is expected to raise more than $100,000 for the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders with the support of sponsors, participants and volunteers. Sponsors for the event include: Superior, Next G!, QUALCOMM, Kyocera, Samsung, Brightpoint, Nextlink, Element 79, San Disk, Jabra, LG, Blue Ant, iGO, Calcomp/ACTS, PCD, Kyocera, Huawei, Performance Technologies, PHD, Zocolo, LG, mPortal, Talley, Motorola, Nortel and ZTE.
This is the fourth year that Cricket has hosted a charity golf tournament in which various wireless industry professionals come together to aid in the fight against Cancer. The tradition started in 2006 when a Cricket employee’s immediate family member was struck by cancer and the company rallied in support. Last year the event raised $80,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of San Diego.
“Cancer can have a detrimental impact on a family, and some of us are lucky enough to have lived through it with the right emotional & financial support structure,” said Sergio Garcia, senior director of devices for Cricket and the chair of the event. “It truly is a privilege to be in a position to work for a company that not only is behind its employees and community, but is able to rally the support of sponsors, volunteers and employees to help those that are less fortunate!”
The event will be held on Tuesday, November 10, at 10 a.m. at Maderas Golf Club, the number one rated golf club in San Diego County, located at 17750 Old Coach Road in Poway, Calif. The full day of festivities includes a helicopter ball drop raffle, foursome golf scramble, silent auction and awards presentation.
