Cyrix Targets Mobile Computing Markets

Establishes new design center in Massachusetts

San Jose Calif. -- Cyrix Corp.is moving forces to the East Coast to take advantage of microprocessor and system-level design talent.

Cyrix, based in Richardson TX and run by Santa Clara-Calif.-based National Semiconductor, has been successful in tapping into the market for low-cost desktop PC and is now going after the mobile markets.

Cyrix is targeting the mobile computing market with new products that will be developed at a design center that has been established at Boxboro Mass.

The New England Mobile Architecture and Design Center will develop microprocessor and motherboard solutions for customers targeting the mobile markets, according to a spokesperson for Cyrix' parent company National Semiconductor. The center will also work on dc/dc circuits and PC audio solutions.

Cyrix is currently positioned in the desktop markets with its Media GX processors and will develop mobile solutions based on subsets of the desktop processors.. The center, staffed by design engineers recruited from Digital Equipment Corp. and some of the staf from the existing Cyrix' System Architecture Group, will work with OEMs to develop designs to be used with notebook PCs and Windows CE-based systems .
