Making Pocket Pool Easy

Electronic News, Feb 8, 1999

Atmel Corp. has been selected by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, a division of Sony Corp., as an integrated circuit supplier for its SCPH- 4000 PocketStation miniature personal digital assistant (PDA) that enhances the gaming experience of the Sony PlayStation. The PocketStation is a stand-alone companion to the PlayStation and comes with an integrated power supply, a compact LCD screen, high quality speakers and bi-directional infrared communication capability.

The PDA can download application software from the PlayStation so consumers can play the applications anywhere. The Atmel single-chip high performance system level device utilizes the ARM7TDMI microcontroller core as the CPU as well as flash memory, RAM, digital-to-analog converter and LCD controller. According to Advanced RISC Machines (ARM) Inc., the ARM core allows the PocketStation to be used as a memory card, allowing the application software to be stored and played on a single PDA.
