Cadence Unveils New Services Offerings, Focuses on Wireless Design
Electronic News, Feb 8, 1999 by Ann Steffora
San Jose, Calif.-Cadence Design Systems is introducing its new Wireless Design Group today, which will specialize in multiple areas of wireless design. The group is part of the Cadence Design Services Network, a global resource of more than 1,000 engineers.
Cadence said its experience and resources set it apart in providing comprehensive design services to the wireless industry, and that pairing its design techniques and technology with a customer's internal resources is the best way to positively impact time-to-market.
The Cadence Wireless Design Group's service offerings include complete product, subsystem, and IC design, with areas of specialization in several established and burgeoning markets, including: Digital Cellular: 2G technologies (GSM, TDMA, CDMA), and 3G technologies (W- CDMA, UMTS, cdma2000); Digital Cordless: DECT, PHS, PWT; Wireless Data: 802.11, HomeRF, HiperLAN, Bluetooth; Messaging: FLEX/ReFLEX; Satellite and Global Positioning Systems.
Cadence's Wireless Design Group was built on the foundation of the Alta Group's expertise in the software simulation of wireless systems, of which it gained wireless expertise. In addition, Cadence has added to its wireless design capabilities through a number of acquisitions, including U.K-based Symbionics' 140-person team in April 1998.
The announcement is in line with what Cadence has said it wanted to do in the wireless area, in that as part of the restructuring, to focus the services group on end markets. And with the acquisition of Symbionics, wireless has become an area that Cadence feels it has a high level of expertise in, noted Jennifer Smith, financial analyst with BancBoston Robertson Stephens.
