Automated attendant on duty - The Antenna - AMR Research report on IT investments and hiring - Brief Article

Electronic News, June 3, 2002

AS BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN SAID, "THESE JOBS ARE GOING, BOY, and they're not coming back." A recent report from Vinay Asgekar of Boston-based AMR Research says high-tech executives would rather invest in information technology rather than bringing back the 500,000 people who lost their jobs during 2001. Asgekar believes companies will focus on enhancing their enterprise planning technology to allow faster response to dramatic changes in the market. The assumption is that cycles will continue their pattern of increasing turbulence, and he warns companies to create planning systems that react more frequently than monthly or quarterly. At the same time, he also expects the outsourcing trend to accelerate.

So far, the deployment of technology has not eliminated jobs. Moreover, if you're starting to wonder where your next meal will come from, it's important to realize analysts aren't always right. Remember the paperless office?
