Contracting Moves
Electronic News, July 23, 2001
AFTER SANMINA CORP., SAN JOSE, COMPLETES ITS $6 BILLION buy of fellow contract manufacturer SCI Systems Inc., Huntsville, Ala., watch for A. Eugene Sapp, SCI.'s chairman and chief executive officer, to become co-chairman of the merged firm with Jure Sola, Sanmina's chairman and CEO. Further out, watch for Sapp retiring in a year but continuing as a director.
The companies added, in a conference call last week, that a new name for the combined company-probably taking advantage of both company names -- will be announced after completion of the deal. In a phone interview, Sapp noted, "Sanmina specializes in high-layer-count PCBs, backplanes, enclosures and specialty cables. We are a more standard EMS house making electronic subassemblies. When you take what they got to what we got, it gives the end-to-end solution to a broad range of customers."
