DVD-Audio Inches Closer

Electronic News, August 9, 1999 by Peter Brown

The DVD Forum has started verification services for products that will be based on the DVD-audio format. The verification is conducted to establish the conformity of DVD products with DVD formats that have been created by the forum. The verification also allows manufacturers to use DVD logos as proof of conformity.

Manufacturers of DVD audio products in existing formats--such as DVD-video, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM and DVD-R--would have to use established authorized laboratories to manufacturer the products. These labs come from companies such as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., Pioneer Corp., Sony Corp., Toshiba Corp., and Warner Advanced Media Operations. DVD-audio is slated to be the next generation of music, with the capability to hold more music and interactive features than current compact discs and cassette tapes. It also will offer listeners a whole range of new features for their PCs, television and storage capabilities. DVD-audio also will offer a way to record music from the home much like CD-R discs of today but with many more songs than is possible with cassettes or CD-R. The DVD Forum hopes to begin delivering DVD-audio in 2000.
