Foundries TSMC, UMC Report July Sales Figures

TAIWAN SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING Co. Ltd. (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), the top two foundries in the world, today reported sales figures for July and the first seven months of the year.

Hsinchu, Taiwan-based TSMC (nyse: TSM) said net sales for July inched up 1 percent from the $246.6 million (8.5 billion Taiwanese dollars) reported in June to about $248.6 million (8.6 billion TWD). Net revenues were down about 43 percent from about $433.5 million (15 billion TWD) reported in July 2000, the company said.

Meanwhile, UMC (nyse: UMC) reported net sales of about $112.7 million (3.9 billion TWD), down 9 percent from the $121.8 million (4.2 billion TWD) reported in June and down about 59 percent from about $268.8 million (9.3 billion TWD) reported in July 2000.

TSMC, the world's No.1 foundry, said sales for the first seven months of the year were about $2.2 billion (74.4 billion TWD), down about 7 percent from about $2.3 billion (79.9 billion TWD) posted in the year-ago period.

UMC, based in Taipei, Taiwan, reported revenues 01 about $1.2 billion (42.5 billion TWD) for the first seven months of the year, down 20 percent from about $1.5 billion (53.1 billion TWD) reported for the same period a year ago.
