STATS Acquires Taiwanese Test House Winstek Semi

Electronic News, August 13, 2001

ST ASSEMBLY TEST SERVICES LTD. (STATS) OF SINGAPORE has signed an agreement to acquire a 51 percent interest in Winstek Semiconductor Corp., Hsinchu, Taiwan, in a cash transaction valued at roughly $28 million. The acquisition marks STATS entry into the Taiwanese marketplace. Winstek is a privately held company that tests optical, mixed signal, digital and RF devices.

It is also capable of providing a range of services including wafer probe, final test, turnkey and drop shipment services. STATS said the acquisition is designed to capture increasing outsourcing opportunities in the Taiwanese chip market. In addition to its 220,000-square foot, four-story plant in Taiwan, Winstek has a technical support office in San Jose. STATS said it expects the transaction to be completed in late August; it is still subject to approval from Taiwanese regulatory authorities and other closing conditions.
