KLA-Tencor Beats the Street

SAN JOSE-BASED KLA-TENCOR CORP. BEAT ANALYSTS' EXPECTAtions by posting revenues of $462 million for its fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30. KLA's 13 percent sequential quarterly revenue decline was 4 percent below revenues for the same quarter last year. The metrology company's (nasdaq: KLAC) operating earnings per share was 29 cents per share, while financial analysts had expected earnings of 25 to 26 cents per share.
In the previous quarter, KLA posted $91 million in profits, or 48 cents per share. For fiscal 2001, the company posted revenues of $2.1 billion, a whopping 40 percent above the previous year's $1.5 billion. Net income was $363 million against $254 million in the previous year. The company said it achieved its record results despite the downturn by retaining about six months of shipment backlog based on current shipment levels. Bookings for the quarter were strongest in Japan and Europe, which grew sequentially.
