Electronic News, August 19, 2002

COMPLEMENTING CHARTERED SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURing Ltd.'s Singapore, Japanese and Taiwanese locations, the foundry opened a regional office in Shanghai, China, last week.

"The opening of Chartered's office in Shanghai is an important milestone for this region, and a key component of our strategy for broadening Chartered's global reach," said Bo Cheng, Chartered VP of Asia/Pacific. "Our strategy in China goes beyond technology and capacity." Acting mostly in a corporate fashion, the Shanghai office will support customer service, engineering and marketing.

Meanwhile, National Semiconductor Corp. said last week it expects to invest about $200 million to open its first China assembly and test plant in Suzhou Industrial Park by 2004.

And the China explosion continues ... we wonder who will be the next ones to make new plans for China this week.
