Silicon Valley Mourns Death of Pioneer William Hewlett

WILLIAM HEWLETT, ONE OF the great Silicon Valley pioneers, died Friday of natural causes. He was 87. Hewlett, who along with Stanford friend David Packard started computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co. in 1938, steered the company, the first to make audio oscillators, into one of the world's largest PC makers.
Hewlett was HP's president until 1977 and chief executive officer for another year. He remained vice chairman until 1987. Hewlett donated millions of dollars of his personal wealth to environmental and educational causes and was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1985.
