ATI, Intel Ink Cross-Licensing Agreement

Electronic News, Jan 15, 2001 by Alex Romanelli

CANADIAN GRAPHICS CHIP-maker ATI Technologies Inc. last week said it has signed a broad cross-licensing agreement with Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip giant Intel Corp.

Details of the deal were not disclosed, but ATI (nasdaq: ATYT) said the agreement gives each company rights to certain patents owned by the other. Markham, Ontario-based ATI said it has also negotiated with Intel (nasdaq: INTC) the right to build integrated chipsets for Intel microprocessor platforms. For example, ATI will now be able to build its Radeon graphics into chipsets for Intel's microprocessors.

"This cross-licensing agreement will enhance our efforts to deliver products to customers who are interested in streaming content, playing interactive games, encoding video or creating Internet content," said Louis Burns, vice president and general manager of Intel's desktop platform group.
