Broadcom Samples EuroDOCSIS HDTV chip

Electronic News, Oct 23, 2000

BROADCOM CORP. LAST week began sampling a single-chip European data over cable serviceinterface specification (EuroDOCSIS) residential gateway chip, with features including voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony, home networking, and Internet protocol (IP) security technology. Irvine, Calif.-based Broadcom claims the chip, dubbed the BCM3352, is the first EuroDOCSIS residential gateway that directly addresses primary-line IP cable telephones. Broadcom hopes the chip will help enable cable operators to transform themselves into multiservice broadband providers of multiline VoIP telephony, high-speed, always-on Internet access, audio and video streaming, and secure networking of PCs and peripherals at home.

Major manufacturers who received EuroDOCSIS certification for cable modem termination systems and cable modems based on Broadcom chips include 3Com, Askey, Dassault, Ericsson and Motorola. "High-speed Internet access over cable is exploding in Europe," said Tim Lindenfelser, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's broadband communications business unit. The BCM3510 is priced at $20 in 10,000-piece quantities and is packaged in a 128-pin PQFP. The BCM7020 is now available, priced at $50 in 10,000-piece quantities, and is packaged in a 420-pin TBGA.
