Analog Devices Unveils MP3 Encoder/Decoder

Electronic News, Dec 4, 2000

ANALOG DEVICES INC. HAS unveiled a chipset that includes a real-time MP3 audio encoder/decoder on a single DSP chip that is fully compliant with the ISO/IEC 11172-3 audio standard. Analog's Melody MP3 chipset encodes and decodes MP3 audio signals in real-time using the company's fixed point-programmable ADSST-218xM DSP chipset.

The chipset also provides a choice of encoding or decoding either MP3 or MPEG-1 Audio Layers 1 and 2 on the same DSP. Both the encoder and decoder run completely within the internal RAM of the DSP without requiring external SDRAM/SRAM. In addition, the MP3 decoder requires less than 32MIPS and the MP3 encoder less than 40MIPS, leaving sufficient processing power for decoding other audio algorithms. The chipset's decoders support all encoding standard bit rates including half-sampling frequencies from 8Kbit/sec. to l60Kbit/sec. and full-sample frequencies from 32Kbit/sec. to 32OKbit/sec. In addition, the chipset's post-processing includes a 5dB bass boost and four equalizer functions. T he Melody MP3 encoder/decoder chipset is available for less than $10 each in volume quantities. A Melody MP3 reference design is also available for $350 and includes the company's ADSST-1885 stereo codec, which can enable the configuration of a complete MP3 player within a 85 x 60 x 30mm footprint and is powered from two 1.5V AA batteries.
