AMD details 64-bit processor chipsets - News Flash - Brief Article

Electronic News, Feb 25, 2002 by Liz Neely

ADVANCED MICRO DEVICES INC. (AMD) LAST WEEK revealed details of the AMD-8000 series chipset for use in current and next-generation computing platforms.

The chipset series and the company's next-generation processor architecture are code-named Hammer. The chipsets incorporate AMD's HyperTransport technology and-are intended for use in the company's 64-bit microprocessors.

AMD also announced that it is working with chipset vendors Ali, SiS, Nvidia and Via, all of which are expected to design and produce chipsets for AMD's 64-bit Hammer processor.

When the series is introduced, it will include the AMD-8111 HyperTransport I/O hub, the AMD-8131 HyperTransport PCI-X tunnel and the AMD-8151 HyperTransport AGP3.0 graphics tunnel. These chipsets for the Hammer processors are scheduled to be available in the fourth quarter, and are designed to provide the basis for AMD processor-based systems.

The Hammer architecture allows for a seamless execution of both 32-bit and 64-bit code, AMD said, and allows applications to meet the need for memory-intensive programs.
