AMD boosts Mach line
Electronic News, Feb 19, 1996
Sunnyvale, Calif.--Advanced Micro Devices will today introduce the MACH211SP and MACH231SP, the first in-system programmable (ISP) devices in its MACH Performance Plus line of complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs). ISP technology was pioneered by simple PLD market leader Lattice Semiconductor and has seen increasing acceptance among companies with a significantly larger presence in the PLD market, such as AMD.
In addition, AMD said its planned MACH 5 Value Plus line, initially disclosed mid-last year (EN, July 17, 1995), is on track for formal introduction in March. AMD earlier this year revealed that the first part in that family, the MACH256/160-7 had begun sampling to multiple OEMs (EN, The Antenna, Jan. 22).
Both AMD's MACH211SP, with 7.5 nanosecond typical pin-to-pin delay (tPD), and MACH231SP with 10ns tPD feature Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) compliance and a power-down mode. The MACH211SP is a 64-macrocell device with 44 pins and 34 inputs and I/Os. It runs at a maximum frequency of 133MHz. The MACH231SP offers a maximum frequency of 100MHz, has 128 macrocells, 100 pins and 70 inputs and I/Os.
The MACH211SP and MACH231SP have been sampling at multiple sites since early this year; the CPLDs are the initial offerings in a planned series in the company's Performance Plus family.
Having on-board ISP capability allows the devices to be programmed while soldered onto a system board, virtually eliminating the need for prototype sockets and stand-alone programming equipment. Both devices can be programmed in any JTAG chain in less than 5 seconds, the company said. Programming support is also available on board testers from Hewlett-Packard Co., Teradyne and Genrad.
The MACH211SP is priced at $5.79 each in quantities of 1,000 and is available in speeds of 7, 10, 12, 15 and 20ns and comes in 44-pin PLCC and TQFP packages. The MACH231SP is priced at $12.67 in the same quantities and speed range and is packaged in 100-pin PQFP and TQFP.
