China doesn't just want to be a superpower, it also wants to produce it. That's why China is building the largest and most powerful hydroelectric dam in the world. Standing about 610 feet high and stretching more than a mile across the Chang River, the dam should generate one-ninth of China's power when it is completed in 2009. The structure's reservoir will engulf canyons, hills, cities, and hundreds of villages. The dam is China's largest construction project since the Great Wall 2,300 years ago.
