[1] CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Downloaders. beware! More than 1 million computer viruses are swarming in cyberspace, just waiting for you to let them in. Their numbers are growing fast. Last year, the Internet security company Symantec detected 711.912 new. malicious computer viruses. That's five times more viruses than Symantec found in 2006 and seven times more than it found in 2005. More than 1.1 million computer viruses now exist.
Some viruses destroy computer files and alter Web pages. Others worm their way into personal computers to secretly track users' keystrokes. These keystroke loggers can copy passwords, bank account information, and credit card numbers. The FBI sometimes uses the technology to catch criminals. However, criminals also use keystroke loggers to steal people's account numbers and then use them or sell them. Some criminal groups hire people to create viruses, California-based Symantec says.
Be careful to protect yourself online, says Stephen Trilling of Symantec. To learn more, go to tinyurl.com/32kh25.
