Hungry in Haiti

[4] PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- In a country where most workers earn less than $2 a day, rising food prices have become a nightmare. Riots broke out in the capital city, Port-au-Prince, in early April. A crowd gathered outside the presidential palace chanting, "We are hungry!" Food prices in Haiti have nearly doubled in the past year, according to the United Nations. Food riots also have broken out in Cameroon, Bangladesh, and Egypt. In Haiti, the president is trying to lower rice prices from about $1 per pound to 86 cents a pound, but that's still expensive. If food prices don't go down, "hundreds of thousands of people will be starving," says Dominique Strauss-Kahn of the International Monetary Fund. That, he says, could lead to rebellions and wars.
