Who Am I?

Ranger Rick, July, 2000

Why do I look so weird? I'm eating something--but what? The shape of my bulge gives you a clue to what's going down--and to my name too.

Be a nature detective and use your library to hunt for this snake's name. If you think you've found it, send it to us on a postcard postmarked by July 31, 2000. We'll mix all the cards together. Then we'll pick until we have 10 with the correct answer. Each winner will receive a book. Check for the answer and the winners' names in our November issue.

Answer to March's "Who am I?"

The insect in all those bubbles is a spittlebug--also called a froghopper nymph. The young insect oozes out juices and blows them into a bubbly froth. The froth keeps the nymph from drying out and may help hide it from enemies. Did you figure out the right answer?

We got lots of postcards with the correct i.d. The 10 we picked "out of the hat" were from Matthew Baker, Virginia; Daniel Bermudez, California; Allison Canfield, New York; Jacob Colburn, Washington; Rachel Durning, Massachusetts;

Shelby Howell, Missouri; Mitchel Kreisler, Connecticut; Michelle Mulrooney, Florida; Casey Soliday, Florida; Kevin Varvaro, New Jersey. Congratulations to everyone who got it right!
