Red crab invasion

BABIES BY THE BILLIONS The female above still carries her eggs under her body. But another crab's eggs didn't make it to the water. Now they're this crab's lunch.

Many of the eggs do make it. And soon they hatch into larvae. The larvae finally turn into tiny crabs (left), which are ready to leave the ocean. They start the trek back to the forest--even if it means climbing over a kid! (right)

Christmas Island is a tiny Australian territory 220 miles (360 km) from the big Indonesian island of Java. It was discovered on Christmas Day in 1643 by an English ship captain.
