More facts - trumpeter swans

Ranger Rick, Feb, 1997 by Nora Steiner Mealy

Trumpeter swans once flew over much of North America. But by the 1900s, fewer than 100 survived in the United States outside of Alaska. Most of these lived in or near Yellowstone National Park.

Here's the good news. In the past few years, wildlife experts have been working hard to help trumpeters spread out and live in all the places they once did. (The National Wildlife Federation, which publishes Ranger Rick magazine, is one of the groups helping out.)

The scientists' hard work and some good laws are helping the trumpeter swans make a comeback. About 16,000 trumpeters now fly the skies over many states as well as Canada.
