Squirmy worms and other wild treats - recipes for salad, snack and sandwich

Ranger Rick, March, 1994

EARLY-BIRD SALAD

What You Need

* Lettuce for a leafy bed * One-half pear for each body * Pieces of fruit and vegetables for wings and beaks * Carrot or celery sticks for legs and raisins for eyes

What You Do

* If you use fresh pears, cut the seeds out of the middle. * See drawing to get an idea how to make the birds. Put one bird on a small plate at each place on the table before your friends arrive. * Add a worm to the beak of each bird (see recipe).

SQUIRMY WORMS

What You Need

* 1 tablespoon honey * 2 tablespoons peanut butter * 2 tablespoons powdered milk

What You Do

* Mix the honey and peanut butter in a coffee mug. Add the powdered milk and stir until you can mix it with your hands. If it's too sticky, add more powdered milk. * Shape the mixture into little worms. Use the back of a knife to mark the worms' rings.

SILLY SANDWICHES

What You Need

* Rolls or French bread * Sandwich fillings (peanut butter, cheese, cream cheese, tuna, lettuce, sliced turkey, tomatoes, cucumbers - whatever you like) * Ketchup, mayonnaise, butter, honey, jelly * Small pieces of carrot, celery, and green pepper * Slices of olives, pickles, and radishes * Cherry tomatoes * Strips of sliced cheese * Grapes, raisins, or peas * Bean sprouts and grated carrots * Frozen peas or corn * Toothpicks

What You Do

* Slice the rolls or bread as shown in the drawing. * Ask your friends to put their favorite fillings in the sandwiches. Then they can look at the pictures on these pages for ideas. Use peanut butter, honey, or toothpicks to stick the pieces on. Have fun turning your sandwiches into wild critters!
