Help for camels

Ranger Rick, August, 1998

Less than 20 years ago in China, there were nearly 3000 wild Bactrian camels (the two-humped kind). But now fewer than 1000 may be left. The camels' drinking water has been polluted by chemicals used in nearby mines. And many camels have been shot and killed illegally. Without help this species could go extinct (die out) within 10 years.

But luckily, help is on the way! Some people are trying to raise money to create a protected area for the camels. The Chinese government has said OK to the refuge plan. And the United Nations may give about half the money needed.
