South Korea lifts embargo on U.S. beef

Food & Drink Weekly, June 18, 2007

South Korea lifts embargo on U.S. beef: USDA says South Korea has lifted its embargo on beef from the United States. South Korea blocked U.S. beef imports at the beginning of last week after inspectors discovered products that did not meet its standards. According to the USDA, the beef--produced by Tyson and Cargill--was meant for domestic consumption and should not have been exported.

USDA spokeswoman Terri Teuber said 38 shipments of U.S. beef that were in quarantine in South Korea will now be released and can be traded.
